The Friends of the Library are a collection of non-profit groups accross the nation that were formed as a way to provide direct financial support to their local community libraries. While our groups exist with a common mission of supporting the magic that libraries provide to their communities, our groups are not connected in an official network.
Our local group is focused on raising funds and acquiring grants to help supplement a variety of programs for our Dallas Public Library including:
Cultural Passes to local museums
High quality printing services
Arts and crafts activities for children, teens, and adults
Annual reading programs
Through these different programs that are built and shared by our local library our Friends organization is on the frontline of spreading the positive impacts that reading incurs, and strengthening our library as a keystone of community in our town.
As a non-profit organization we raise funding through a variety of fundraisers through the year. We come together as a group for these events. We rely on our members and the volunteer time that they are able to give us to get these done, and we also rely on them to keep their ears to the ground and bring new opportunities to the group as they are discovered. We are always on the lookout for new fundraising ideas while maintaining time-tested events with our semi-annual book sale. Feel free to send in a suggestion on our Contact Us page!
Our organization is made up of people in our local community who have filled out our general form with information on themselves and whether or not they have any interest in volunteering time for events. From this pool of members we hold annual elections for our board positions. The board members and member at large positions are the only voting members at board meetings.
Our board is made up of the following positions:
President
Vice President
Secretary
Treasurer
Members at Large (four positions)
These positions are voted on at our annual elections meeting. At this meeting every person that holds membership with the Friends can vote to elect the next board members.
Being a member can be whatever you make it! As part of our intake form we have questions regarding what your interests are and the different areas that our organization can use help in. These areas are wide ranging and by no means an exhaustive list! If you have an interest that isn't outlined we are always open to new ideas on contributions to the group. Alternatively, simply being a member of our organization is a contribution in itself, knowing that your membership fee is helping to fund our critical projects.
The role of the president is responsible for a number of tasks including: Leading the monthly meetings, coordinating fundraising efforts, and keeping an eye on the larger picture of our organization to keep everyone on the same page as we achieve our goals.
The role of the vice president on our board has more leeway and freedom in their defined roles with the intent to support both the needs of the president, and provide relief if the president has to be absent from a meeting, as well as providing any necessary services that are required by the group.
The secretary of our group is a master of all tasks in the organization. Some of the formal tasks include taking minutes, maintaining the member list, and coordinating efforts of the members for our different fundraising operations.
As the name suggests, the treasurer is responsible for all financial matters for our group. This includes keeping a register of all transactions for incoming and outgoing funds for the Friends, issuing receipts for monetary donations, and maintaining the tax filings and business filing requirements for our non-profit status.
We currently have three member at large positions that are filled, and their purpose is to provide representation for the greater members who do not hold a board position. Thes members at large ensure that the board is keeping the general members at the forefront of the mind as we navigate the varying projects and developments that affect us all.
